The Voice beat its rival Britain's Got Talent in the ratings for the third consecutive week on Saturday (April 21, 2012), before pulling in an even bigger audience of 10.1 million for its 90-minute episode on Sunday. The first edition of the show introduced the "battle round" stage of the competition, in which singing hopefuls had to perform duets whilst simultaneously trying to out-do their partner. ITV bosses were reportedly furious with The Voice after it over-ran by three minutes and overlapped with the start of Britain's Got Talent. According to the Press Association, television bosses say it had an impact on Simon Cowell's show because viewers who wanted to watch both shows missed the beginning of Britain's Got Talent. Though programmes overrunning is commonplace on live television, The Voice is still in the pre-recorded stage of its competition and ITV believe there is no excuse for the timing error. In response, the BBC explained that it originally made its programme a 100-minute edition and re-edited it to 90 minutes to minimize the potential overlap. British audiences have certainly taken to The Voice, which was a hit in the U.S. during its debut last year, while the popularity of Cowell's Britain's Got Talent appears to be on the wane. Next Saturday, viewing figures for The Voice are expected to rise again as viewers will have the chance to vote for their favourite contestants - with four being eliminated. The early frontrunners for The Voice include Becky Hill and Jaz Ellington - a soul singer who battled through a chest infection to secure his place in the live finals.
