It follows an incident in Acton, west London, on Tuesday, Scotland Yard said. Details of the incident have just emerged.

The 59-year-old was arrested alongside another man at 4.30am on Tuesday after a Citroen DS3 hit a kerb.

Officers on a routine patrol discovered the crash scene at the junction of The Vale and Dordrecht Road. It is understood police were unclear on who had been behind the wheel.

Both men have been bailed pending further inquiries. Barrymore - whose real name Michael Parker - is due to appear at Ealing Magistrates' Court on December 7.

Barrymore, who was once one of the country's most high-profile TV stars, has had a controversial career.

In the 1980s shows such as Strike It Lucky and My Kind Of People attracted many millions of viewers and gave him a salary to match.

He announced he was gay in 1995 and split from Cheryl, his manager and wife of 19 years, after which his career floundered.

He appeared on the small screen as a housemate on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006 and was popular enough with viewers to take second place behind "spoof" celebrity Chantelle Houghton.
